LAD # 11
John Calhoun's speech talks about how discontent the South is with the nation. The issue with slavery is significant in that eventually the Union will be separated due to this The South is also unhappy because of their different wants and beliefs than that of the North's. Furthermeore it seems that the South has a very little role in government and that the North basically controls every aspect of it. In this speech, Calhoun blames the government for the South's decreasing role in government and the destruction of equilibrium between the North and the South. In addition, the South is extremely discontent with the tariff which is harmful to the Southern economy yet benefits the Northern economy. However, the North feels this is justifield. It comes down to cooperation by the North to give up some power and the desire to aqcuire new territory in order to save the nation. If unable to comply, the South will secede from the Union.
