LAD #9
The origin of the women's rights movement was due to the anti-lslavery crusade in 1840. At the World Anti-Slavery Convention in London a group of American were excluded from the discussion. Therefore the Seneca Women's Right Convention was held and was the first of its kind ever held.
The Declaration of Sentiments begins by justifying that women should have the right to vote by stating that both men and women have certain unalienable rights under God including life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If the government is destructive and does not secure these rights, it is those who are governed to insist that a a new institution of government be proposed. The Declaration also mentions that prudence is one of the causes for not having the equality to men because it seems that mankind would rather suffer than to change the forms of what their accustomed to. However, when usurpations and abuses continue it is the duty of the ones harmed to throw off the government in order to provide future security. Due to this, it is the necessity of women to demand equality by which they are entitled.
The Declaration continues to state the injustices of man toward women and also that they hold an absolute tyranny over women.
Such injustices include that a woman...
cannot exercise the right to the elective franchise
she must submit to laws
do not have any rights
does not have representation in legislation and is supressed
is civilly dead in the eyes of the law when married
does not have the right to property
is able to commit crimes if it is the command of the husband (her master)
has no say in divorce or any terms of the divorce
if single and owns property, must pay a tax to a government that does not acknowledge her
is denied a thorough education and college
may not publically participate in Church affairs
faces moral delinquencies that are tolerated by men everday
sphere of action is ignored even though it is Jehova's perogative
considered dependent and has no confidence or self respect because it is man's every intention to do this to women
Due to these unjust laws mentioned above, women feel oppressed and deprived of their rights and insist upon immediate admission to the rights and privleges that are given to them as a citizen of the United States.
Every form of petition in order to obtain equality will be used. Therefore this convention is the first of many to be held.
Secondly the Declaration of Sentiments states the Resolutions:
women should have the same rights and should have the equality of men.
They should be able to vote when it comes political and religious matters.
Lastly, men should not be treated higher than women because they are equal in God's eyes.
